We adopted minke from a foster home almost 3 years ago. She was about 1 and no one knew what her previous like entailed. She was a little nervous and gittery when we brought her home but now she's part of the family. She's become a very content and happy cat and loves dearly. She's runs to the table when we get home for her hello scratches.

After 6 months without a dog I was lonely so I started looking at the pound and RSPCA for a small to medium sized poodle. There were none to be found. Then I remembered a notice at the vets about adoption. I rang immediately and was told there was a poodle called Monty ready to be adopted. Monty was Julian's mother's name and I said, "I think he is meant for me."

When I arrived to meet Monty, there was a cat sitting on the doorstep and I said hello and stroked it. Then I saw this lovely white and apricot poodle. The carer said that when I spoke to the cat, Monty wagged his tail and got excited. And that was it we fell in love.

As I left with Monty, I told the carer that I would like another dog to keep him company. She said there was another dog, but someone was looking at him that afternoon and she would let me know if he was still available later.

Zoltan, a Jack Russell/Whippet cross weighed 3 kilos and you could see the light through his skin. "How can I tell her I can't take him, because he is too ugly," I thought. Of course I didn't tell her and the dogs really liked each other so Zoltan stayed.

In 2015, they are 11 years and 9 years old. Monty has no sight due to glaucoma and Zoltan weighs 10 kilos and still has some PTSD!!

We all love each other and are growing old together.

Adopt a dog, it works.

In 2006, we decided to add to our fur family as Oz, our then staffy cross was a bit lonesome during the day without us. I came across a female 3m old ‘staffy cross’ on the DCH website with similar markings to Ozzie and I was sold. We drove out to western Sydney to meet her.

I fell in love with Kenzie on the spot and before we knew it, we had ourselves a new pooch! We took her home and introduced her to Oz. He was not impressed and within moments had her cornered in our front yard. This is when we learned Kenz had a fighting spirit, once cornered, she went on the attack and Oz was suitably chastened. It wasn’t long before they were absolutely the best of mates.

The website was wrong in stating that Kenz was a staffy cross. She grew. And grew. And grew. We think she is cattle cross kelpie, possibly with a bit of dalmation. She is an integral part of our family, obedient, gentle and loving dog although extremely timid after a neighbours dog attacked her a few years back but good ole Oz came to her defence. She has seen some changes in our family, 2 interstate moves, 2 children and the passing of Oz. And she remains as ever, my Princess Mackenzie!

We adopted Coco as a kitten for a present for our Chihuahua Luna’s 1st birthday. They adore each other, right from the day we brought him home they have been best friends. Coco has a beautiful nature and we love him very much.

Dawn

I adopted Lily who was previously known as Libby. Lily was in foster care after being seized by the Blacktown pound. She was severely abused for the first 6 months of her life. She suffered from severe anxiety, to the point she would wet herself and hide under anything she could find in order to feel safe. It took a lot of time and patience but she has come a long way in 3 years, and is now an obedience champion and all around beautiful, happy and outgoing girl.

Hallie

This is Mao.We adopted him in July 2008.He was formerly known as Blackbean but our nieces chose his new name.He lives with 2 other rescue cats, Goe and Chrissy and a rescue german shepherd, Narls.He is the cat that keeps the peace.We love him to bits.

Chris

Kinkie, the pussycat with a kinked tail (like on Facebook!) became a member of our family 4 years ago. She has been a gorgeous well behaved cat since day 1 & impresses us with her loving smart personality every single day! Her hobbies are fetching, hanging out with Barnie, her toy owl friend, who was bigger than her when she arrived!

I adopted Dot as a kitten in 2009. She was brought up in a student sharehouse, quickly accruing friends and felt right at home amongst the many people who would come through our house each week. Life's a bit calmer for her these days, but she still comes running every afternoon when I get home, and aside from digging up my planter box occasionally I couldn't ask for a better cat and companion.

James

Sulo was found as a 4 week old kitten thrown in the bottom of a rubbish bin (Sulo bin hence her name). After being cared for by DCH she came into our lives and 7 years later she still rules the roost and reigns over our dog!

After living overseas for five years and travelling a lot, I was very unsettled when I came back to Australia. My friends (who had two cats that I always played with) thought it would help me to settle if I had my own cat so they decided to get me a cat for Xmas in 2007. We combed a number of rescue sites for weeks before I saw Riley (now regularly referred to as Prince Riley of Oz) and fell in love with him. I still don’t know what is was about him that made him stand out from the hundreds of other kittens looking for a forever home but he was the perfect choice for me.

Riley and I bonded almost immediately when I picked him up and we have best buds for 7 going on 8 years. He is the centre of my universe and everyone that meets him love him. He still has a playful kitten attitude and we play chase and hide and seek regularly (my neighbours think I’m crazy buy they love him and play with him when they think I’m not watching).

We have a morning routine of cuddles which has me carrying him around to each of the windows to look out before he joins me on the yoga mat for some stretching.

My favourite time of day is coming home from work when he greets me at the door and I love the way his tail sticks up straight as he runs to me.

He is happy and healthy and I’m so glad I found him on DCH website. He is the best companion in the world and I can’t image my life without him.
